Washington, D.C. (MASF) Sept. 24th, 2010 – In a report released this week by commissioners of the 9/11 Commission, on the phenomenon of “homegrown terrorism”: released this week by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), youth programs by the Muslim American Society (MAS) and the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) were cited as positive examples of a significant effort, launched by the Muslim community in the United States, to address efforts to promote violence and religious extremism among American Muslim youth. The report highlights MAS and MPAC’s positive alternatives to the promotion of violence and socially destructive influences from outside forces that seek to steer young Muslims in ways that are dangerous and counter-productive to themselves and their community. Both organizations have expanded their youth programs that focus on civic engagement, leadership training, and mentoring. The MAS youth program is called “The Straight Path Initiative.” It focuses on countering extremism, hate, and violence. It also provides activism training that prepares young Muslims to positively address issues involving social and economic justice.

A sister called me today expressing concern about the new message she feels is now more often expressed by Muslim leaders: “we love America”. “How can you love America?” She asked. How can you turn a blind eye to all the injustices both inside and outside America being done by our government and our people? Look at our history. Look at the current reality. Look at the invasion of Iraq, supporting Israel at any cost, the prejudices against Muslims, American Indians, African Americans, Japanese Americans, and other minorities. Look at the social inequalities in our own society between rich and poor. Look at all the promiscuity. When you say “I love America” you are putting yourself in the same side of the right wingers who use this as a blank support for our military expansions overseas. How can you keep saying “I love America”? Is this some sort of a new PR campaign? Well, it is not working!

What was even more interesting is that this sister is actually a white American convert. You wouldn’t think of it, right?

I shared with the sister the following:

- Our love to our people, our love to our country, America, is not a blind love. It is the love that is advocated by the prophet PBUH: that causes us to correct the wrong, and to advocate for justice. Like a person who corrects his friend, out of love, not out of anger or envy. It is the love expressed in the hadith: support your brother whether wrong or right. If wrong, help him correct the wrong.

- A prophet sent to his people must care for, and love his people. Allah called each prophet a “brother” to his non-believing people. The prophet loved Mecca, although Mecca was turning away from him. He loved Mecca in the sense that he wanted the best for his people, and worked hard to help them be better. He was sad and crying when he was leaving Mecca. When an Angel came to him offering to destroy a neighboring tribe, he refused the offer, and prayed for their wellbeing and guidance. This is how we love America, our people.

- Most Muslims love their country of origin, although their government may be doing horrible things. An Egyptian has no more right to love his country more than I have a right to love mine.

- This love does not stop us from speaking out and acting against injustices that are happening around us. However, to be authentic to our faith, we cannot only speak out against injustices that are happening to Muslims. The prophet did not advocate for justice only for Muslims; he was sent to stand up for Justice and mercy foreveryone. That means recognizing and speaking out against injustice when it happens by Muslims against others (terrorism, oppression, rights of nonMuslim minorities, etc..). It also means speaking out against injustices happening against other people who are not Muslims.

- Our recognition of the wrong in America does not mean that we should turn a blind eye to all the good that is in America. Like any other country, America is not perfect; but there is a lot of good in America. Some of this is good is well aligned with Islamic values: rights of minorities, freedom of religion, democracy(shura), respect for the rule of law, respect to others, fulfilling opportunities, willingness and desire to accept the truth, ability to change for the better, honesty, courage, hospitality, etc…

- In fact Islam recognized the good that the Meccans had, although they stood against the prophet in the beginning. There is often a section in Islamic history books that talk about why Allah chose Mecca to be a place to receive His message: generosity, strong belief, commitment, loyalty, strength, etc… Islam channeled this good in a better direction to become a more positive presence in the world. We must recognize the good that is in America, and not only look at the bad. To be fair, we should also use the same scale when we evaluate America as we would other countries. It is not fair to compare the worst of America with the best of Islamic history, or vice-versa.

In 2010, America’s ideals and principles are likely the closest that the human mind has come to divine guidance. This is in fact why Muslims often find it easier and more accommodating to practice our religion, and live our lives as Muslims in this beautiful land.

America also has a lot to learn and gain from Islam and Muslims. Islam offers a more complete knowledge of the creator who sent not just one, but many prophets. Islam is the same religion of Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them). Islam offers an authentic, practical, preserved, and dynamic religion that can be rationally and practically applied in our daily life. Islam offers wholesome solutions many problems in the family and society. Islam offers a comprehensive view that, when applied correctly, fosters progress and development at all level. Islam offers an authentic, final message from the Creator that has not been altered by humans. Islam offers a balance between the material and the spiritual that makes a human being whole and fills a deep void in humanity today.

Therefore, as a Muslim, I am genuinely proclaiming to my Lord that I love America. I love the people to whom you have sent me, oh Lord. I love them and I genuinely care for their well being. I hope that they become the best in the world, and that Islam touches their lives like nothing has touched them before. I am grateful that you have given me the opportunity to take your message to this beautiful land of promise and opportunity. I pray that America will be a role model in the world, and will live up to your ideals. I look forward to strengthen the good ideals that are part of America. I look forward to change the injustices that are in America. I only ask you to allow us as Muslims to live up to this huge responsibility, and to appreciate your gift and opportunity that you have given us.

The Straight Path Initiative is a long-term campaign aimed at engaging all components of the Muslim American community, with a special focus on youth ages 15-30 as well as people of other faith who are interested in the following cause: Understanding and addressing the roots of religious extremism, the ways in which individuals are radicalized, and the tools needed to address these challenges.

From its founding days, MAS has worked to promote an understanding of Islam which we believe was espoused and actualized by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions through the following three concepts: a) God conscious spirituality; b) comprehensiveness; and c) balanced moderation. We consider engagement on the topic of radicalization and religious extremism in our communities as an essential part of conveying Islam with utmost clarity and preserving the rights of Muslim Americans and their organizations.

Concerns about terrorism becoming popular within the Muslim American community have been more prevalent since the tragedy of the September 11th attacks. Muslims in Europe were said to be radicalized due to political and soci-economic marginalization, while Muslims in the United States have often demonstratedwell-integrated immigrant communities that were immune to the kind of “home grown terrorist activity” taking place in several European countries. The year 2009, however, brought to the fore an unusual number of cases that highlighted the vulnerability of Muslim Americans to the influence of extremist ideology and radicalized thought.

At the same time, a recently published Duke University study entitled “Anti-Terror Lessons of Muslim-Americans” acknowledges the positive impact Muslim American organizations have had on stemming the flow of radicalization and extremism. The report notes the community’s swift denunciation of terrorism, internal self-policing practices, positive community building, and heightened political engagement as examples of practical outcomes of efforts to combat radicalization.

MAS is uniquely equipped– with its chapter structure, youth department, self-development programs, youth centers and MAS Freedom civic and advocacy initiatives– to play a pivotal role in providing programs that will serve as deterrents to involvement in religious extremism. In that light, we have embarked on a plan of action, dubbed the Straight Path Initiative, that includes a number of carefully designed and executed projects focusing on increasing the availability of moderate interpretations of Islamic principles, youth engagement projects, and audio/visual and social networking outreach, among others.

Goals & Objectives

 Initiate an honest and open dialogue about radicalization and extremism in Muslim American communities.

 Research and pinpoint the root causes of radicalization and extremism among Muslim American youth in particular.

 Engage the Muslim American community in monitoring and detecting extremist trends and their impact on vulnerable members of the community.

 Make use of modern audio/visual technology in promoting better understanding of challenges of extremism and opportunities for engagement.

 Target high schools and college campuses with programs and activities to involve young Muslim Americans in a proactive way that limits opportunities for radicalization.

 Train and educate Muslim American community leaders in imparting accurate Islamic principles and interpretations of controversial and often misunderstood issues.

 Increase awareness of the benefits of civic engagement, political involvement, and community building in fighting extremism.

Signature Projects

Muslim Youth Leadership Forum: Building Young Muslim Leaders for a Better America

The goal of the forum is to mentor and prepare young Muslim leaders to provide leadership not only to the Muslim community but the greater American society at large. The institutional design focuses on developing and enhancing leadership skill sets of Muslim youth that will impact America’s civic, social, economic and religious life. Youth participants will be placed in a leadership social mentoring network that will allow them to communicate after the initial forum on an ongoing basis with qualified mentors and other forum participants.

iBelong Campaign

The goal of the iBelong after school program is to facilitate positive development in youth by assisting them in developing trusting relationships, challenging them to develop skills and discover talents through offering them developmentally appropriate, yet culturally sensitive programs. The program is piloted in 2011 by MAS Houston and will insha Allah be franchised to other locations in the future.

Interactive Youth Oriented Website

The Internet is the most effective way to reach out to community members, especially young Muslim Americans. An interactive, dynamic website tied to this campaign will include: public service announcement (PSA) headlined by prominent Muslim Americans that youth can identify with, sharing a message promoting moderation, engagement, and community participation, moderated discussion forums and social networking components, resources on contemporary religious issues, profiles of Muslim American youth making a positive impact in their communities, volunteer/job boards that enumerate opportunities for political activism, civic engagement, community service, advocacy, etc.

The Straight Path Public Awareness Campaign

This public awareness-raising campaign is meant to create a “buzz” at high schools, college campuses, and youth centers nationwide. The campaign will make public the issues of concern to the community and attempt to address them through several projects, including lecture series, roundtable discussions, education through art initiatives, and community service projects, among others.

By Raja Abdulrahim

For the last decade, U.S. Muslim organizations have faced criticism that they don’t do enough to condemn — or prevent — extremism and terrorism.

But now that many of the groups are speaking publicly about the radicalization of Muslim youths and even developing scared-straight-type programs to steer young people away from extremism, they are being criticized in their own community for saying too much.

Critics contend that organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, the Muslim Public Affairs Council and the Muslim American Society are pandering to outsiders who equate Muslims with extremism.

“Muslims don’t really mind if Fox News says something crazy, because you don’t have as much an affiliation with Fox News,” said Suhail Dar, president of the national Muslim Students Association. “But if it’s someone you know, or you think they know you . . . it definitely hits closer because you wouldn’t expect it.”

In the wake of the Ft. Hood, Texas, shooting, the reports of dozens of Minnesota youths joining a Somalian resistance and the December terrorism-related arrests of five young men from Virginia who traveled to Pakistan, CAIR publicly addressed the issue of radicalization and outlined how it had helped the families of the Virginia men report the disappearances to the FBI.

Around that time, the Muslim Public Affairs Council released a study about counter-terrorism efforts that outlined five theories on why Muslims become radicalized.

And more recently, the Muslim American Society launched the Straight Path Campaign, an initiative aimed at providing Muslim youths with an alternative to radicalization. The first goal for the campaign has been to hold more than 100 town hall meetings across the country to discuss why the message of violent radicalization resonates with some and what Muslims can do about it.

“I don’t know why all these groups were suddenly releasing scathing reports about homegrown terrorism,” said Reem Salahi, a civil rights attorney based in Santa Monica. “It really just bothered me; why are we so eager to jump on the bandwagon?”

Younger community members said Muslim leadership has sold them out by giving weight to broad generalizations about Muslims and terrorism. They have also objected to the use of the word “radicalization,” which generally refers to those who are sympathetic to terrorists or have terrorist ties.

There is concern, they said, that the word is being used so broadly that it could be pegged to anyone with unpopular views.

“When we hear people say Muslim youth are becoming extreme, we’d go, ‘Hold up,’ ” said Omar Zarka, a UCLA engineering graduate student, turning to his left and right as if looking for extremists. “We don’t see any of it. Whatever, dude.”

Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, there have been relatively few occurrences of radicalization and violent extremism among U.S. Muslims, in part because the community is self-policing and publicly denounces such acts, according to a Duke University study released earlier this year.

The study, funded by the National Institute of Justice, found 139 incidents over an eight-year period of U.S. Muslims committing acts of terrorism-related violence or being prosecuted for violent terrorism-related offenses.

It concluded that “homegrown terrorism is a serious, but limited problem.”

The study and ongoing debate among Muslims has raised the question of whether homegrown terrorism is a real issue. It also highlights a rare divide in a community that typically operates in a top-down manner.

Over the last several months, the Muslim organizations have coordinated meetings at their headquarters, mosques and student groups.

The discussions have led to more understanding on both sides, including an acknowledgment of the difficult position the national organizations find themselves in: stuck between calls for action and internal demands for a more measured response.

Although the leaders say they understand the concerns of younger members, they insist the issue is not one they can ignore — for both practical and public relations purposes.

“Do we address it and speak about it and add fuel to the fire of those who want to make this a big issue? Even addressing a false frame or an exaggerated frame adds to the perpetuation of that stereotype,” said Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Los Angeles chapter of CAIR. “It’s like Nixon coming out on TV and saying ‘I’m not a crook.’ “

Like its sister chapters nationwide, CAIR-LA held a meeting at its Anaheim office to discuss what is myth and what is reality when discussing radicalization.

At the Islamic Center of Southern California, administrators planned a seminar for parents about the signs of youth radicalization, but later — after complaints — tempered the event’s message and changed the format to a discussion.

In February, Suhaib Webb, a Northern California imam studying in Egypt, organized an online gathering among representatives from across the country.

Even from Egypt, Webb was hearing polarized opinions on the issue and wanted to provide a neutral forum.

David Schanzer, who headed the Duke study, said that although the issue of Muslim radicalization has been overhyped by the media and government, it is not an issue Muslims can afford to ignore.

The only way to sway public opinion about Muslims is to have community leaders publicly address the concerns and quell fears, said Schanzer, director of the Triangle Center of Terrorism and Homeland Security.

Hossam AlJabri, executive director of the Muslim American Society, acknowledged that organizations like his are walking a fine line with the issue but said he could not wait until it becomes a major crisis.

“We recognize that this is an exaggerated problem right now,” he said. “But it could become a real monster

WASHINGTON, DC. (MASNET) Mar. 18, 2010 – A statement issued by Muslim Cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki calls for the categorical opposition by Muslims in America to the government of the United States. This is a sentiment expressed by Muslims who consider America to be the incorrigible “enemy of Islam” and a nation at war with all Muslims in the world.

But the Muslim American Society, and other American Muslim organizations, reject the premise that America is essentially evil, and that our society is committed to the destruction of either Islam or majority-Muslim nations. Indeed, Muslims are an inseparable part of American social history and the fabric of American society. Both our presence in the United States and our aspirations to build a better, more peaceful, and more democratic and morally upright society, are an integral part of what is both right and hopeful for this nation, and our world.

Our organization does, indeed, oppose military violence directed by the United States against the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, as we also call for a different, more peaceful, and more mutually respectful relationship between the United States and the Muslim world. But we embrace the practice and methodology of American Muslim involvement in civic engagement and ongoing dialogue within the diverse community of the United States.

The violence and hostility that underlies the call of Al-Awlaki is simply a prescription for the cancer of mutual hatred, and destruction, that is contrary to the best of not only the history of the United States, but to the best of Islam as well.

The Quran instructs Muslims to incline toward peace, forgiveness, and mutual respect with our non-Muslim neighbors and compatriots (3:64, 21:7). Peace and mercy, not war and enmity, is the true way of our faith.

The “revolt” of Muslims in America should always be a revolt against violence, oppression, and unrighteousness, whether it is committed by the U.S. government or by violent entities in the Muslim world that are, at least in part, responsible for the oppression and destruction of their own nations and people. And in rejecting the call for violence, we affirm our commitment to seek peace and justice for our own community, our nation, and for the global Muslim community as well.

How can you have your loyalty to a government that is leading the war against Islam and Muslims?” As a Washington Post article stated, this is a call for a U.S. Muslim revolt.

MPAC has already issued a brief statement on this nauseating and traitorous statement from al Awlaki: “We reject Al-Awlaki’s message as destructive, appalling, and a violation of core Islamic teachings. Muslim Americans are active citizens who believe in working for change through civic and political engagement with our elected leaders. Al-Awlaki represents no one but himself, and his wicked attempt to exploit political frustrations will not be tolerated by Muslim Americans.”

CAIR: “As American Muslims said with one voice when this cowardly attack first occurred, no ideology could ever justify or excuse such violence. To call the alleged killer a ‘hero’ makes a mockery of every Islamic principle of justice. The twisted and misguided views in Anwar al-Awlaki’s posting are not those of American Muslims and do not reflect mainstream Islamic beliefs or sentiments.”

MPAC: “Awlaki’s statement is deplorable and sickening, and has no place in our country or in Islam,” said MPAC Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed as well as to those wounded and their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with law enforcement and the US military to maintain the safety and security of all Americans.”

Dar al Hijrah Mosque (where Al Awlaki once taught): “After the recent tragic events in Fort Hood, Texas a hate-filled statement was made by a former imam of Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, Anwar Al-Awlaki. As we understand the teaching of the scriptures our mission and method as Americans of faith is to enrich our society with faith, service, wisdom and beautiful preaching of God’s love and mercy to all of mankind. We openly denounce the statement of Mr. Al-Awlaki as posted on his website and those who may follow him. During Mr. Al-Awlaki’s employment his public speech was consistent with the values of tolerance and cooperation. Mr. Awlaki now claims that the American Muslims who have condemned the violent act of Major Hassan “committed treason against the Muslim Umaah and have fallen into hypocrisy”. With this reversal Mr. Al-Awlaki has clearly set himself apart from this community. He served a brief term of employment at Dar Al-Hijrah from January 2001 until his departure in April 2002.”

All of these statements apply equally to Al Awlaki’s most recent tirade. “The twisted and misguided views in Anwar al-Awlaki’s posting are not those of American Muslims and do not reflect mainstream Islamic beliefs or sentiments.” ” Awlaki’s statement is deplorable and sickening, and has no place in our country or in Islam” “Mr. Al-Awlaki has clearly set himself apart from this community.”

The American Muslim has collected 105 fatwas from Islamic scholars, 75 statements by Islamic Organizations (many of these signed by anywhere from 50 to 500 scholars from around the world), and 142 statements by individual Muslims. These are from 30 countries including: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Britain, Chechnya, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritania, Morocco, New Zealand, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, U.S., Yemen.

Al Awlaki took Hamza Yusuf’s advice “If you hate the west, emigrate to a Muslim country”. He needs to stay wherever he is and the Muslim leadership needs to continue to do everything in their power to counteract his message of hate.

Al Awlaki is a traitor to our country, and hopefully will be brought to justice before he can infect others with his hateful venom.

On Extremism:

I feel cheated and used
molested and bruised
shat on and abused
by extremists…
Rather…
I feel my faith has been
cheated and used
molested and bruised
shat on and abused
by extremists…
I feel angry..
not violently angry…
but broodingly, poetically angry.
Rather, I feel fury at these people with faces
plastered all over the news
claiming to be liberators and freedom fighters
wrenching and clawing at my center
and leaving me faceless and faithless
but no… i am not faithless..
I’m just another muslim
whose faith has been raped by extremists..
And I… the rape victim
have been left with…
the aftermath
and now I, no we, must rise
from our ashes of blood and semen
like a phoenix
and rebuild broken….
no, blown up bridges…
while extremists clip our wings…
And I can’t help but to be angry…
actually, I feel regret
that people actually developed these
extremist and violent mentalities
it makes me nauseous and outraged
hurt and violated
pissed off and manipulated
and I’m trying to figure out what I can do.
but what can i do?
write?
i guess so…
so, I wield my pen as my ‘metaphorical’ sword
and my paper as my shield
and tell these extremists
what their extremism REALLY means:
NOTHING…
actually…. they are nothing
their faith is misplaced
and somewhere along the lines
their love turned to hate
their hope turned to fear
and they became no more than
a restless scared and angry child
lashing out at anyone who comes near.
so, although you strap bombs to your chests
and kill innocents like pests
you are no more than a
fallen tree in an empty forest…
your message is lost
amongst hundreds of fallen trees
and yet, somehow
I feel cheated and used
molested and bruised
shat on and abused
by extremists.
instead of helping our faith…
you’ve raped her…
left her bloody and bloated with child…
left her like a run-a-way father
to deal with the aftermath of
your violent actions…
what does your extremism amount to?
nothing…
because you’ve already abandoned your child.

This week, news broke of a convert women who had planned to commit terrorist acts in Europe. She was recruited by violent radicals over the internet. This is an important reminder to the Muslim community that it is not just the youth who are recruited for this wrong and evil interpretation of Islam. In fact, it is anyone who is vulnerable, without true information about their faith. Youth and converts are especially good targets for this.

This only goes to highlight the important work that organizations such as MAS, and others, must do in order to ensure that converts understand Islam correctly, and are not lured into the extreme and wrong interpretations of Islam.
